Come join us on Nov. 6 for an inspiring talk from some leaders in the medical field. Featured speakers are Dr. Glen Bandiera and Dr. Alfred Cividino. Dr. Glen Bandiera is the Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital and past President of the Canadian Association for Medical Education. Dr. Alfred Cividino is Division Director and Professor at McMaster University in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine.
Agenda:
Each speaker will be giving talks that will be ~25 min in length. Following these talks, there will be a panel style discussion lasting ~20 min, with the speakers at the front taking questions regarding their talks and different aspects of the medical field. The discussion should provide an enjoyable interactive component as well as provide the benefit of seeing different and overlapping perspectives!
After the discussion, there will be an optional networking session with food and beverages where speakers and students can stay, network, and connect with one another.

Description: Calling all students interested in the medical industry. If you are interested in finding a coop job for an upcoming term or simply want to learn about medical research opportunities in the Waterloo region, you won't want to miss this event!
Local medical companies - such as Oculys, Medella Health, Mozzaz, Qidni Labs, Suncayr, ExVivo Labs and Vitameter - are coming to the University of Waterloo on Sept. 23rd, to connect with students interested in the medical field and meet students interested in being employed in their companies.
These companies' innovative products may have a profound impact on medical and healthcare related industries. The products include advanced renal replacement therapies, a less invasive allergy testing method, electronic health care solutions to help physicians to better manage patient therapy and more.
In order to connect with these companies and learn a bit more about what they do, make sure to come out to this event!
Start-Ups in the Medical Industry
Date: Wednesday July 9,2014 (5:45 pm - 7:00 pm) Room: DC 1304 Description: Ever considered starting your own company? Interested in the medical field? Don't know where to start? Well, Engineers in Medicine is hosting an event featuring Jack Martins, Research and Development coordinator for Fio Corp. who will speak about his journey in creating a successful medical company. Jack will speak about his background, interests, inspirations, path to his current position, and current work. The event will give attendees a personable experience to learn where they can follow their interests instead of the classic, cut and dry model that may restrict where students believe they can go. At the end of the event there will be a short networking session for those interested. |
Where Do You Go From Here II?
Date: Wednesday May 28, 2014 (5:45 pm - 7:00 pm) Room: QNC 1502 Description: The “Where Do You Go From Here” event series is tailored to engineering students who have a distinct interest in medicine and its related fields and invites several distinguished engineers who have followed their passion in medicine to various places (biomedical engineering professors, practicing physicians, entrepreneurs, etc.). Our guests will speak about their background, interests, inspirations, path to their current position, and current work. These events will give attendees a personable experience to learn where they can follow their interests instead of the classic, cut and dry model that may restrict where students believe they can go. Events in this series will conclude with a networking session. This “Where Do You Go From Here?” event (5:45 - 7:00 pm May 28, 2014; QNC 1502) invited Dr. Glen Bandiera, Associate Dean of Post-Graduate Medical Education at University of Toronto and Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital, to take us through his journey. |
Speed Networking
Date: Wednesday May 21, 2014 (6:00 pm - 7:00 pm) Room: SLC Multipurpose Room Description: Are you interested in Engineering and/or Medicine? Are you interested in gaining awareness and fostering networking connections? Then, don't miss EiM's Speed Networking session on Wednesday May 21st! Students will have the opportunity to discuss their medical experiences and interets with all of the other students at the event during timed networking intervals for the first 30 min of the event. Students will then have the opportunity to go and network further with the students they meet in a less structured format. Where Do You Go From Here?

Innovations in Medicine
Importance, Design, and Implementation Date: Nov. 5th (6:15 pm - 8:30 pm) Room: QNC 2502 This mini-conference will centered around innovations in the medical industry. Each speaker focused on the importance, design, and implementation of medical innovations in their company or research. After each of these talks, students had the opportunity to ask the speakers questions in a panel style discussion. The speakers at the event included Armen Bakirtzian, CEO and Co-Founder of Avenir Medical, Krishna Conjeevaram, VP of Business development at Mespere Lifesciences, and Dr. David Armstrong, Associate Professor of Medicine at McMaster University. Date: September 24th (6:30 - 8:00 pm) Room: QNC 2502 University of Waterloo graduate Dr. Andrew Fung, current scientific advisor for Aterica Health Inc. and recipient of a Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for his work on developing a chewable rapid malaria diagnostics device, will be giving a talk on his past work with a focus on how collaborations with other members of the medical industry and healthcare field aided in development. Moreover, Pam Waechter from the Centre for Career Action at the University of Waterloo will be giving a short talk about the path that engineering students can pursue for a career in medicine. The event will conclude with a networking session to allow for attendees to meet with our speakers and each other. |

Start-Ups in the Medical Industry: Nicoya Lifesciences Date: July 3rd (6:40 - 7:30 pm) Room: QNC 2502 Nicoya Lifesciences is an early stage nanotechnology company developing medical diagnostic products that will change the world of healthcare. Medical Discussion Date: June 5th (6:30 - 7:30 pm) Room: QNC 2501 The discussion centered around an insightful Ted talk given by Francis Collins. We watched the video (http://www.ted.com/talks/francis_collins_we_need_better_drugs_now.html) and then be breaking into small discussion groups to discuss some of the major points.
